An incredible video has surfaced from the BBC archives of the movie star treading the boards at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland.

But, alas, it wasn't a winning year for England as, despite entering three different categories, 20-year-old Statham failed to win a medal.

While Statham appears to start his dive well, his entry into the pool is poor as he over extends the dive, making an enormous splash.

But diving's loss was Hollywood's gain as Jason found himself snapped up  by clothing brand French Connection and later appeared in several music videos.

Before long he was spotted by director Guy Ritchie and was cast as Bacon in the 1998 hit Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Jason's also turned into something of a hit with the celebrity ladies, having once dated glamour model Kelly Brook and has now been in a relationship with model Rosie Huntington-Whitely since 2010.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games begins in Glasgow on Wednesday with the opening ceremony at Celtic Park.

Susan Boyle and Rod Stewart are set to perform at the event which is expected to draw a global audience of 1.5bn.
