A baby-killer was jailed for nine years today for beating his lover's son to death after she refused to give him a child.

Michael Pearce, 33, begged girlfriend Donna Sullock to have a child with him on the night he battered her six-week-old son Alfie to death.

After she refused, burly mechanic Pearce offered to babysit Alfie while she enjoyed her first night out after giving birth.

Jealous Pearce encouraged Donna, 29, to leave him alone with her child - saying "you can trust me".

But he attacked Alfie with bottles of bubble bath, baby power and hit him with a baseball boot.

Pearce tried to make out it was a tragic accident - calling paramedics who found Alfie "blue, cold and totally lifeless".

Mum Donna will "never know" why Pearce killed her son and has been left too scared to have another relationship.

Pearce was today jailed for nine years and a judge questioned whether jealousy was the motive for the fatal attack.

Judge Mr Justice Baker told him: ""It may well be that due to your denials we may never know whether you were motivated by jealousy as a result of Donna's refusal to have your child earlier that evening.

"Alfie died as a result of you having inflicted upon him multiple blunt force injuries."

Pearce was cleared of murder following trial but found guilty of manslaughter.

Donna, of Fairwater, Cardiff, said she was "disappointed" with the verdict and that she had "been through a year of absolute hell".
