£300k Lamborghini seized after driver was caught without insurance

It is only one of three high-priced Lamborghini in a top 10 list of marques which the police seized and then sold to pay back finance companies owed money on the vehicles.

An astonishing £56million worth of uninsured cars and vans with outstanding finance were recovered in 2104 alone, from humble hatchbacks to speedy supercars.

Among them were two Bentleys and two rollers with a combined value of more than half a million pounds, said vehicle history check service HPI.

It also included 503 Vauxhall Corsas and 431 Astras, the two most commonly uninsured models in Britain.

Normally many of the cheaper, uninsured, cars would go to be crushed but where the owners still have outstanding loans on them, these are sold to pay off the debt.

The Rolls Rolyce Wraith

The Rolls Rolyce Wraith came up second in the pricest car that the police seized

Last year this included nearly 1,300 Vauxhalls, 1,183 Fords, 678 BMWs and 555 Volkswagens.

But it also included 206 Transit Vans where the drivers were uninsured and still owed money lent to them to buy the vehicles in the first place.

All were recovered by a scheme run in partnership with law enforcement agencies, finance companies and the motor industry to avoid scrapping vehicles with outstanding loans.

HPI managing director Neil Hodson said: “Although, the majority of cars we recovered in 2014, are popular, lower priced vehicles, we also helped recover a significant number of high-end makes and models.

“Along with some astonishing supercars, we recovered a significant number of Audi, BMW, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

“It’s clear that insurance evasion crosses social and financial boundaries.”
