In a standard move for a soccer club (or any company for that matter), Valencia has sought to trademark their new crest to protect its usage. DC Comics, however, have challenged this attempt to trademark their new club crest, claiming that it is too similar to the Batman logo. What is odd, though, is that this issue hasn’t come up before.
The Valencia club crest has had a bat on it since the beginning of the club. If you want to go even further, the bat has been on heraldic coat-of-arms of Valencia for centuries and come from the coat-of-arms of King James of Aragon. Many areas of Spain that were a part of the kingdom of Aragon use the bat as a symbol of their cities, including Catalonia the Balearic Islands, and, obviously, Valencia. This challenge shouldn’t be that big of an issue in the face of this much evidence for a historical use of the symbol. That, and the symbols don’t even look that similar.
