Batman is sharing the screen with Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but that doesn’t exactly mean they’re going head to head.

In an interview with USA Today, director Zack Snyder revealed that the “v” in the film’s title means more than you might think. In fact, the Man of Steel director purposefully used that instead of “vs.” “to keep it from being a straight ‘versus’ movie, even in the most subtle way.”

Less subtly, Warner Bros. tweeted a new image of Henry Cavill (see above), who returns to play Superman after working with Snyder in Man of Steel, to accompany the photo’s simultaneous debut on USA Today‘s website. (Superman’s look hasn’t changed.) And unlike our previous speculation that Batman’s top billing in Dawn of Justice‘s title might signal a big role for Bruce Wayne, Snyder revealed that the caped crusader was actually added to the movie second.

“I was in no rush to put Batman in the movie,” he told USA Today, “but on the other hand it seemed organic the way our story was unfolding to start to feather him in.”

And as for which sort of Batman Affleck might be playing, it seems Dawn of Justice’s Batman could fall on the darker Bale side of the Clooney-Bale spectrum. Snyder revealed that the film is planning to skip to an older, world-weary Batman: “It’s cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys,” he said.

Of course, there’s one more superhero in the mix: Wonder Woman, played by Israeli supermodel Gal Gadot. Snyder admitted, however, that he hasn’t filmed any scenes with her yet. Right now, “she’s working out and getting buff and ripped.”
